The moment one notice a black spot on a tooth, one must consult nearest Dentist. This black spot is a tooth decay & damage called caries. When teeth are quite damaged by caries resulting in cavitations, the need of dental fillings appears.
A dental filling is done for restoration of, structure & function of the tooth, with future protection from further decay and/or damage. For making a dental filling the dead decayed black part of the tooth is removed and a cavity is prepared with proper undercuts for retaining the filling material.
